System operation – History

Four network codes were initially developed pursuant to the Framework Guidelines on Electricity System Operation, namely:

  • Network Code on Operational Security
  • Network Code on Operational Planning and Scheduling
  • Network Code on Load-frequency Control and Reserves
  • Network Code on Emergency and Restoration

The Agency recommended the further consideration and adoption through comitology by the European Commission on 26 September 2013 of the Network Code on Load-Frequency Control and Reserves, on 11 November 2013 of the Network Code on Operational Security and of the Network Code on Operational Planning and Scheduling, and on 23 June 2015 of the Network Code on Emergency and Restoration.

In due course of comitology, the Network Codes on Operational Security, Operational Planning and Scheduling and Load-frequency Control and Reserves were merged into the Guideline on Electricity Transmission System Operation. The latter received a postive vote in comitology on 4 May 2016 and is scheduled to be adopted soon.

For information related to the adoption of Network Codes, please consult the European Commission’s webpage dedicated to the Electricity Cross-Border Committee.
